Euroregion Elbe/Labe

History of Euroregion Elbe/Labe

Euroregion Elbe/Labe was found on June 24th, 1992. This founding act was preceded by the constitution of two municipal organisations, the then "Klub Euroregion Labe" (today: municipal association Euroregion Labe) on Czech side and the "Kommunalgemeinschaft Euroregion Oberes Elbtal / Osterzgebirge e.V." on German side.

Thus, cities, municipalities and districts in parts of Northern Bohemia, Saxon Switzerland, other parts of the upper Elbe Valley and the Eastern Ore Mountains had come together to pursue the idea of promoting and shaping trust and cooperation and supporting cross-border development in all areas of life.

To this end, a total of 7 working groups were set up before the establishment of the Elbe/Labe Euroregion (regional development, economic development/tourism, transport and border crossings, environment and nature protection, health and social services, culture/education/sport, civil protection).

The founding conference of the Euroregion Elbe/Labe in Ústí n.L. adopted first of all the most important documents for the cross-border cooperation to be shaped: the framework agreement and the first considerations on regional cross-border development. At the same time, they document the ideas for cross-border cooperation at local and regional level.

Since its foundation, the Euroregion Elbe/Labe has worked to establish and develop a network of cross-border cooperation. Increasingly, this network should cover all areas of municipal and regional responsibility.

The Euroregion Elbe/Labe acts as a platform, link and coordinator between Saxony and Northern Bohemia within its defined territory.

With the admission of the Czech Republic on 01.05.2004 into the European Union and on 21.12.2007 into the Schengen area, further stages of cross-border cooperation in the Euroregion Elbe/Labe began.

Detailed information on the prehistory of the foundation of the Euroregion Elbe/Labe, the founding act and the celebrations can be found in the chronicles of the Euroregion Elbe/Labe 1992-2007 (pdf, 7 MB, German) and 2008-2017 (pdf, 11 MB, German).
