Jiří Kroupa, a foreman in an agricultural machinery factory, is forced by the works council to attend night school. He must improve his qualifications in order to be able to keep his job after the planned modernization of the company. He is joined by a motley crew of students - the flighty Hujer, the flirtatious Mrs. Týfová, the class villains Tuček and Šlajs, the confused Plha and the eternal sleepwalker Dudek. Although most of them are middle-aged, they turn back into schoolchildren. They copy, moan, disrupt classes, lie if they haven't done their homework and just wait for the bell to ring. Their teachers are just as idiosyncratic as the students, among whom stand out the peculiar chemistry teacher Hrbolek and the class teacher Janda, who has to endure many difficulties with his adult students over the course of the school year, such as unexpected "parent evenings" with a large number of participants, especially the Hujer family.
