The blade of the guillotine separates the condemned man's head from his torso, but the head immediately springs back onto the body and the sheep slaughterer Bedřich Frydrych comes back to life. With temperament, he tells his story "backwards" and returns to the events before the execution - right up to his dramatic encounter with his future wife Julie.
At the trial, Bedřich is sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. He was caught by a policeman while transporting her dismembered body in a suitcase. The following sequence shows in reverse how his wife's body is returned to its original state, and the action returns to the starting point of Bedřich's life story.
He lives happily with Julie, but a wild jealousy scene suggests that she is unfaithful to him. Bedřich tracks down his wife's lover, a certain Mr. Ptáček, whom he heroically saved from drowning when he and Julie were on their honeymoon by the sea. The wedding to Julie is preceded by Bedřich's separation from his lover. Although Julie's mother agrees to the wedding, the girl tries to take her own life, and the plot moves closer to the beginning of the story, in which Julie meets Bedřich...
