In 1942, the fascist government of the so-called Slovakian state passed the Nuremberg Laws. Confiscated Jewish businesses are handed over to vetted Slovakian citizens. Carpenter Tono Brtko (Jozef Króner), an honest and decent man, reluctantly accepts the Arizona Decree for old lady Rozalia Lautmannová's (Ida Kamińska) haberdashery business under pressure from his greedy wife and high-ranking brother-in-law. The half-deaf lady doesn't understand what's going on in the country and regards Ton as her sidekick. At home and in public, however, Brtko pretends to be "getting up". In reality, he is renovating old furniture in Mrs. Lautmann's house while she looks after him like a son. But then comes the day when all the town's Jews are summoned for deportation and Tono has to show his colors...
