This social comedy was based on the French play "Kristian". The main hero is travel agency employee Alois Novák, who sets off once a month to the "big world" of Bar Orient. There he meets the young and rich Zuzana Rendlová. She sees through his double life and brings him back to reality alongside his faithful wife Mařenka.
Although the theme of the film was not particularly original, the tasteful realization and the sensitive performances of the two leading actors made Kristian an evergreen of Czech cinema. Kristian was shown at the International Film Festival in Venice, and Adina Mandlová and Martin Frič received the Minister of Industry and Trade Award for their roles.
The film was shot in the spring of 1939 after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Hitler's Germany (i.e. in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) and premiered on September 8, 1939. After the Second World War, the film was shown again, but some scenes with Adina Mandlová and Jára Kohout were cut, as they had fallen out of favor due to their behavior during the Protectorate period.
