»Želary« on Jan 1st within Czech Film Wednesday
01.01.2026
We begin Czech Film Wednesday in 2026 with "Želary", a romantic drama from 2003. As always, it will be shown on the first Wednesday of the month, this time on January 7, at 8 pm at Zentralkino Dresden.
The film tells the story of a young woman who hides from the Nazis in the Slovakian mountains during the Protectorate. She marries a local mountain farmer as a disguise, lives with him and helps with the daily work. Slowly, the two protagonists become increasingly close. Until one day the Soviet liberators arrive...
In contrast to many other films set in that period, the people are not portrayed in a bad light. Otherwise there are always - possibly rightly - many traitors, collaborators and immoral beneficiaries, but here we are shown a much more pleasant picture of humanity. Together with the wonderful images of the mountains and the romantic relationship, this is - despite the tragic moments - a movie with a high feel-good factor. Perhaps that is why it is so popular in the Czech Republic (as are many other films about that period).
We have only scheduled one screening this time and there are not many seats left. So if you are interested, you should be quick.
