The history of the Germans in Bohemia and Moravia is the subject of two lectures followed by a discussion. Prepared and organized by the association “Buntes Sebnitz e. V.” as part of their cross-border project "Our neighbors - their history, their traditions, their scenically significant places". The two lectures conclude the project.
The second lecture follows the first (which took place on October 6th) and covers the era from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the Second World War and the associated expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia. The topic should be of interest not only to the Sudeten Germans and their descendants, but to everyone who is interested in the history of neighboring countries.
The introductory speech will be given by Mgr. Tomáš Okurka, Ph.D. He studied history and German at the Pedagogical Faculty of the JE Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and completed his doctoral studies at the Institute of Economic and Social History at the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University in Prague. He completed semesters at the universities of Münster, Bielefeld and Vienna. He works as a historian in the Museum of the City of Ústí nad Labem and teaches at the Faculty of Philosophy at the JE Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. From November 2016 to April 2017 he was acting director of the Collegia Bohemica, since then he has been deputy director and curator of the collection. His specialty is the economic and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the history of the Germans in the Bohemian lands. He published a series of studies on industrial exhibitions in Bohemia and on the regional history of northwest Bohemia and edited a publication on German opponents of National Socialism in the Bohemian lands. He is the author of the book “Outstanding Economic and National Deed”. Industrial and general exhibitions in Bohemia 1891–1914 (Prague – Ústí nad Labem, 2016).
