»Samotáři« (Einzelgänger) am 6.8. beim Tschechischen Filmmittwoch
28.07.2025
At Czech Film Wednesday on August 6, we will be screening the ultimate cult film of the 2000s: "Samotáři" (Loners).
Through a series of loosely connected episodes, the film portrays a group of eccentric young people in Prague in the late 1990s, all of whom feel a bit lost. They must first come to terms with the great freedom brought about by the advent of capitalism. All the characters are searching for happiness and a sense of belonging, but individualism and a fear of commitment always stand in their way. Sometimes it’s just the excessive use of marijuana and the resulting short-term memory lapses. One character tries to make sense of life by constantly filming everything and ends up helping his friends finally break up. Another desperately chases after his childhood sweetheart, who must surely want him now that he has become a successful doctor. She, in turn, suddenly finds herself at her parents’ house as an ethnographic subject of study, where Japanese visitors want to experience a real Czech family.
The film’s cult status is also underscored by the fact that various quotes and characters from the film have become part of everyday Czech culture and are quoted from time to time.
