On August 5, as part of Czech Film Wednesday, you can look forward to "Kristian," a 1939 comedy that has become a true Czech classic.
The main character of this comedy is Alois Novák, a travel agency employee who, once a month at the Orient Bar, pretends to be the wealthy CEO, Mr. Kristian. There, he regularly mingles with beautiful women, to whom—just as he does at the travel agency counter—he raves about the enchanting beauty of Egypt. One day, he crosses paths with the young and wealthy Zuzana, who isn’t about to accept his discreet exit. She sees through his double life, gets him into some trouble, and ultimately brings him back to reality at his wife’s side.
Of course, from today’s perspective, the film’s plot is only moderately original, but at the time, comedies of mistaken identity of all kinds were very popular. *Kristian* is certainly one of the best and remains one of the most popular of these films to this day. It also offers an interesting glimpse into the social mores of the 1930s, especially among the more refined circles.
