Medal of Merit for Denemarková and Rudiš
President Petr Pavel traditionally awarded the highest medals to deserving public figures in the Czech Republic on the occasion of the national holiday on October 28. The internationally renowned architect Eva Jiříčná received one of the highest awards, the Order of the White Lion in the 3rd class civil group. Dissidents Anna Šabátová and Daniel Kroupa were awarded the Masaryk Order 3rd Class.
Commentators praised the choice of recipients. At last, personalities who really deserve it are being honored again, said the Auxiliary Bishop of Prague, Václav Malý, for example. He was alluding to the 20-year presidencies of Miloš Zeman and Václav Klaus.
Several artists were also honored. The writer Radka Denemarková and the writer Jaroslav Rudiš received the First Degree Medal of Merit. Among those honored with this medal are documentary filmmaker Helena Třeštíková (long-term documentary: René), popular actor Ivan Trojan and economist and former presidential candidate Jan Švejnar.
Nobody wants the station building in Moldava
The railroad station building in Moldava, a town on the Czech border with Saxony, has not been sold. No offer was submitted in a bidding round. The minimum bid was 3 million crowns (120,000 euros). The municipality now wants to discuss how to proceed. A new tender is expected, but then at a lower price. The building has been empty for a long time and is not in good condition. However, renovation is beyond the means of the small village. Moldava is now the terminus of the listed railroad line from Most via Osek up to the ridge of the Ore Mountains. Before 1945, the tracks continued to Rechenberg-Bienenmühle and formed a direct link to the Saxon mining town of Freiberg.
