»O věcech nadpřirozených« on Nov 4 within Czech Film Wednesday
26.10.2026
At the next Czech Film Wednesday on November 4, we’ll be screening a gem from 1958: “O věcech nadpřirozených” (On Supernatural Things). The film consists of three independent stories that explore the challenges of dealing with inexplicable phenomena. The film is based on a story by Karel Čapek.
In the first story, a lowly bank clerk behaves very decently and is rewarded with a halo—which, however, only causes him problems.
In the second, a very jealous husband tries to catch his wife cheating with the help of a fortune-teller. But due to a mix-up, the wrong marriage is analyzed, and everything gets turned upside down.
The third story is about a traffic accident that brings a dead man back to life on the way to the cemetery. Here, too, you should expect great entertainment, but: This outcome will surprise you!
It’s always a bit difficult to find good Czechoslovakian films from the 1950s. This one is an exception. It still follows the tradition of filmmaking that existed before the Czechoslovak New Wave brought about significant changes in the early 1960s. Nevertheless, it already hinted at a shift by rejecting the propaganda elements that had been standard since 1948. To achieve this, the stories had to be set in the pre-socialist past. Jiří Krejčík, one of the three directors, had already been featured several times at Film Wednesday with serious films such as “Probuzení” (1959) and “Vyšší princip” (1960), as well as the absurd comedy “Svatba jako řemen” (1967), and has been featured several times on Film Wednesday.
The cast includes Oldřich Nový—a very well-known actor from previous decades, seen for example in the 1939 film “Kristian”—as well as other stars from the 1930s. With Vlastimil Brodský, on the other hand, we see one of the most prolific actors of the post-war era at a relatively young age. In this way, the film serves as a bridge between filmmaking before 1948 (or even before 1939) and after 1960.
We’ve scheduled two screenings, at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The second one is already quite full, but tickets are still available for the first one.
