The Palais Großer Garten presents a collection of Saxon garden sculpture that perfectly accords with the character of this, the earliest Baroque building in the Electorate of Saxony. Fifty original sculptures, including works by Balthasar Permoser, Benjamin Thomae, Johann Christian Kirchner and Gottfried Knöffler, give an extensive insight into sculpture in Saxony from the end of the seventeenth to the middle of the eighteenth century. Most of the figures come from the Dresden Zwinger, while others are from the Schlosspark Seerhausen and other parks attached to great houses, and from the Eliasfriedhof (Elias cemetery) in Dresden. For conservation reasons the sculptures have been removed from their original settings, where in some cases they have been replaced by copies. In the Palais Großer Garten these works of art are being shown in a condition that clearly shows the effects of time. Restoring them will be our task for the future.
