The museum, which has existed since 1988, is dedicated to the eventful history of Germany's oldest mountain railroad, the Freital-Birkigt-Possendorf line known as the Windbergbahn or Saxon Semmeringbahn®. It was opened in 1857 as a pure coal transport line. The museum station in Dresden-Gittersee is built in the style of the 1920s. You can experience historic rail vehicles and a functioning mechanical signal box. The station's reception building houses the museum on the history of the Windbergbahn. Since November 2010, the Windbergbahn e.V. has been operating this railroad line as the first standard-gauge museum railroad in the Free State of Saxony. Museum trains will soon be running between Dresden Central Station and Dresden-Gittersee.
