In existence since 1988, this museum features the eventful history of Germany's oldest mountain railway: the so-called "Windbergbahn" or "Sächsische Semmeringbahn" connecting Freital, Birkigt and Possendorf. It opened in 1857 and was originally used exclusively to convey coal. The museum station in Dresden-Gittersee was built in the style of the 1920s. Apart from historical rail vehicles, visitors will be captivated by the functional mechanical signal box. The museum on the history of the Windbergbahn Railway is located in the station building. The Windbergbahn Society has been operating this railway route as the Free State of Saxony's first standard-gauge museum railway since November 2010. oon museum trains will be travelling between Dresden Main Station and Dresden-Gittersee.
