Windbergbahn railway

Railway line and small museum run by enthusiasts about the "Saxon Semmeringbahn"

The museum, which has existed since 1988, deals with the eventful history of the oldest German mountain railway, the Freital-Birkigt - Possendorf railway line known as the Windbergbahn or Saxon Semmeringbahn®. It was opened in 1857 purely as a coal transport railway. The museum station in Dresden-Gittersee was built in the style of the 1920s. You can experience, among other things, historic rail vehicles and a functioning mechanical signal box. The museum on the history of the Windbergbahn is located in the entrance building of the station.

After the last trips of historic trains on the remaining section of the route between Dresden Central Station and Dresden-Gittersee - the highest station in the city - had to be stopped in 1998 due to poor condition of the track, the association is working to gradually put the line back into operation. The aim is to have museum trains running on the route again. On selected days of the year, there are special trips with the historic Windberg observation car on the section that is already passable.
