The Felsenbühne Rathen is an open-air theatre in the rocky landscape of the National Park of Saxon Switzerland and is located in the basin at the upper end of the Wehlgrund, right below Bastei and Felsenburg Neurathen.
The Felsenbühne Rathen is considered the most beautiful natural theatre in Europe. Here ideas for Carl Maria von Weber's "Freischütz" and the first productions of the Winnetou novels by Karl May were created. This is the reason for the close connection between the Felsenbühne and the Landesbühnen Sachsen in Radebeul (where Karl May lived).
In 1936 the open-air theatre was established in front of the incomparable scenery of sandstone rocks in Rathen. Since 1954, the Landesbühnen Sachsen have been performing annually from May to September on the natural stage, giving Saxon Switzerland a special highlight. Whether rock musicals like "HAIR", classics like "Winnetou I" or plays for the whole family like "The Sun under the Magic Dream Tree" - the Felsenbühne Rathen has a wide repertoire for lovers of open-air theatre.
