Albrechtsburg Castle

The first castle in the history of German architecture

The Albrechtsburg in Meissen is the first "Schloss" ever built in Germany. Here master builder Arnold von Westfalen realized innovative architectural elements such as arched curtain windows and impressive cell vaults. By decree of Augustus the Strong, the legendary Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was founded in Albrechtsburg Castle in 1710. Porcelain was produced here for more than 150 years. The Albrechtsburg has housed a public museum since as long ago as 1881. Today the permanent displays focus above all on the Gothic architecture and the historicist alterations carried out in the nineteenth century. The castle's role in the history of Saxony, life in the castle, and its use as the first European porcelain manufactory are also featured here. Displays on three floors shed light on medieval building, domestic culture and monumental painting of the nineteenth century. Media stations and multimedia applications intensify the learning experience.
