The castle was built at the end of the 14th century by the powerful Wartenberg family, who owned extensive estates nearby. In the 16th century it was acquired by the Bünaus, an important noble family in the region. They soon built themselves a palace near Krasné Březno and do not inhabit the castle any more. It was used for military purposes until the 30-year war and then fell into disrepair.
A large part of the boundary wall of the castle core, the armoured turret and a part of the cellar on the eastern side of the castle has been preserved until today. The apparently best preserved part was not built until 1931 as a viewing platform. Unfortunately, some old parts were lost in the process.
From the castle you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bohemian Central Mountains, the Erzgebirge, the Lusatian Mountains and much more. On a clear day you can see ten other castles near and far from the castle's viewing platform.
